The woman’s question was directed at Marcus, but he seemed lost in Millie’s appearance, his lips pressed tightly together.

“Yes. You saved her life, and I’m in your debt. If you’ll allow me, I’d like to offer a generous reward.”

Marcus’ words were for the lady of the house, but his eyes never left Millie.

His gaze on Millie was unyielding, as if fearing that a mere blink might lead to another perilous situation for her. The initial realization that she was missing had left him with an emptiness, a sensation as if a vital part of himself had been torn away, and that void still lingered within him.
