As Humphrey entered Ryan’s office and faced his stern gaze, he felt a twinge of guilt.

“You assured me that we would win the case.”

Humphrey’s head drooped as a sense of remorse gripped him.

“Ryan, I apologize. There was an unexpected turn yesterday. Millie obtained evidence from Nancy and… We trailed her to a riverbank. We believed she’d plunged into the river, but it seems she managed to escape. Last night, I genuinely believed she’d jumped into the river, and to spare you worry, I chose not to inform you.
