Chapter 678 Aftereffects

Steven clenched his fists tightly; his eyes filled with murderous intent.

He was indeed useless. So much had happened to his daughter at the hands of Zoey, yet he couldn't even seek justice for her.

However, he was at a loss. If he took action against Zoey and Sofie sought retaliation, it would ultimately be Bailey who would bear the consequences.

His daughter had already suffered too much. He couldn't bring her any more trouble.

“Arrange a press conference. Let's announce to the public that Bay is the legitimate daughter of the Shurmer family. She shall no longer be labeled as the 'illegitimate child'.”

Steven wanted her to marry into the Luther family with dignity. When people talked about her, they would say that she was a worthy partner for Artemis instead of whispering behind her back that she didn't deserve him.

Waverly hesitated before cautioning, “But that girl hasn't forgiven us. If we hold a press conference rashly...”

Before she could finish, Steven waved his hand to interrupt her. “Whether she forgives us or not is her own business. Whether we acknowledge her identity is our business. They are mutually exclusive. The girl has turned heartless because we hurt her too deeply. We can only wait for time to heal her wounds and hope she will eventually forget the past.”

Waverly pounded her chest in anguish and said, “It's my fault. I was blind and didn't see how good she was. Instead, I was biased toward our adopted daughter. I failed our biological daughter and caused her to feel disheartened. I deeply regret my actions. If my children refuse to forgive me, my life will be a complete failure.”

Steven opened his mouth, intending to say a few words of consolation. However, it was as though there was a lump in his throat, and he could not utter a single word.

After all, they deserved the punishment.

Meanwhile, Justin was examining a report in the medical base examination room. His expression was extremely solemn.

Feeling a little anxious, Artemis asked in a deep voice, “What's the situation? Please say something.”

“Things aren't looking very optimistic. She's still in postpartum confinement and has been through too much. Moreover, the cold air penetrated her body because she was soaked in the snow for over an hour. It's highly likely that she will suffer aftereffects such as headaches and heart palpitations. Besides that, she will be prone to viral infections from now on. To put it bluntly, her immune system is practically non-existent.”

Artemis squeezed his eyes shut.

He regretted his actions.

Not only did he allow her to put her life at risk, but he also made use of her to lure Yvette out.

“Can't you treat her?”

Justin shook his head. “Her vitality has been greatly damaged; even I am at a complete loss of what to do. As a healer, maybe she knows how to cure herself, but it's uncertain if she can identify the root cause of her problem.”

With a heavy heart, Artemis lifted his gaze and looked at the woman lying in the room behind the glass window.

Her face was pale, and her features appeared more emaciated. Even though she looked delicate, his heart broke when he saw her frail appearance.

“I understand. You're dismissed.”

Justin nodded. “Okay, I'll leave first. You can go in and keep her company. We can see how things are after she wakes up.”

“Okay.”

The room instantly became quiet. Artemis slowly reached out his hand and turned the doorknob, but his legs felt so heavy that he couldn't move an inch.

He did not have the courage to face her.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed through the corridor, and in walked several children.

Tears welled up in Artemis' eyes when he saw the little ones.

“Your mommy is resting; you can come and see her later,” Artemis said before walking out of the room.

Zayron nudged Susan's arm and gave her a look.

In an instant, the little girl rushed to the door and hugged her father's leg.

“Daddy, you're very sad, right? You blame yourself and think you didn't protect Mommy well,” she said.

Lifting his head slightly, tears glistened in the corners of Artemis' eyes.

“Susan, I...”

Before he could finish his sentence, the little girl grabbed his wrist and pulled him outside.

“Daddy, there's so much snow outside. Let's play in the snow, okay? Even if you disagree, we still have to go,” Susan urged.

The two brothers inside the room exchanged a glance, feeling speechless.

Being a girl is so easy; they can act cute and get their way. If we tried to act coy in front of Daddy, he would probably send us flying into the wall.
