Chapter 684 Better To Amputate

Holden hung his head.

“I'm sorry. My sister, Shannon, was wrongly accused of stealing a top secret from Tarragon. I was given an order by the elders to retrieve control of Zaewora from the Hoffman family to save her. After acquiring it, I was in a rush to rescue my sister. That's why I didn't get the chance to bid farewell.”

At the time, Holden had returned to Tarragon with the loot but had no idea Shannon had chopped off an arm to escape from Tarragon.

The elders wanted the loot and couldn't explain things to him, so his memory was wiped out.

He had fallen for their trap.

As a result, he failed to protect Shannon, and his actions caused Wendy and their son to get kicked out of their family.

Wendy grew more emotional after hearing his explanation.

“So my son and I were simply necessary sacrifices in your bid to save your sister?”

Holden lifted his head and met Wendy's gaze with a solemn expression. “No,” he said firmly. “I never intended for you and our son to be sacrificed for the sake of my sister. My plan was to save Shannon first and then come back for you. It was too dangerous to bring you to Tarragon. I had no idea that I would fall into their trap and lose my memories.”

Wendy let out a bitter chuckle and turned her gaze toward the ceiling. “This is fate. You weren't there when I needed you the most, Holden. Do you know that my son and I wouldn't have survived until today without Lionel? He saved me and married me. Even though we were a fake couple, he gave me a home. I was so grateful for his protection that I thought I had fallen in love with him. But when he ended up with Victoria, I knew I was only relying on him. You are the one I both love and hate.”

Holden held Wendy's wrist firmly. “Don't lose hope and be pessimistic. I never intended to hurt you. I never thought about leaving you. Wendy, I am certain that I love you. At that time, I had no other option but to lie to you. If you still resent me, you can express your anger toward me. But please, don't sever our relationship because it hadn't been easy for us to reconcile.”

Wendy withdrew her hand and spoke in a calm tone. “It's impossible. When you left me with the Hoffman family to face the dangerous situation alone, knowing that I was pregnant, it was already over for us.”

Right then, Shannon walked in with their breakfast.

When she noticed the strange atmosphere and Wendy's wet cheeks, she shot Holden a look.

“You look disheveled, Holden. Why don't you go wash up? I'll take care of Wendy,” she offered.

Holden nodded.

If he pushed her too much, he would only make things worse.

I'll stop here and continue after she recovers. No one will dare to take her away from me.

At the ICU, Zeke helped Bailey into the ward to see Edmund staring at the ceiling blankly. He was awake.

Bailey's eyes reddened when she saw how badly injured he was.

She dared not bring herself to look at him.

He had poured his heart and soul into loving her, but it had left him in a pitiable state.

As if sensing her pained gaze, Edmund gradually came back to his senses.

Slowly, he turned around, his gaze falling on her figure. He gave her a warm smile.

“Bay, you're here.”

Tears immediately flowed down Bailey's cheeks.

She shoved Zeke aside and stumbled toward his bed, burying her face into the sheets as she cried out loud.

Edmund reached out to caress her cheek, and she buried her face into his palm.

She looked gorgeous even though she was crying.

Edmund let out a sigh and said, “Losing a leg is not the end of the world. I can still protect the person I care about, and that's what matters.”

Bailey took a deep breath and wiped her tears away. “I'll do everything I can to aid in your recovery. Trust me, Edmund. I will make sure you recover completely.”

Despite the excruciating pain that shot through his leg, Edmund remained silent. His eyes remained gentle, betraying no hint of his discomfort.

“I haven't checked my leg after waking up. Didn't it get amputated? I'm feeling pain not just in my thigh, but in my whole leg.”

Bailey started crying again. “It's better that you don't look at it. Promise me to not look at it for the following month.”

Edmund nodded. “Okay, you have my word. I won't look at it, but will you tell me about my current condition?”

Bailey didn't feel like telling him the truth.

How can I break it to him that the flesh on his calf necrotized, and I had to remove all of it, leaving only the bone? Additionally, there are multiple fractures on his bone, so he may require an artificial one. I don't have the heart to disclose this harsh reality to him.

“It's not as serious as you think. I didn't amputate your leg, so it is still intact. The following month might be unbearable as you need to suffer the torture. Don't worry, for I'll be with you at all times. Trust me, Edmund. Give me three years. I promise that you'll be able to stand up and walk three years later.”
