Chapter 835 The Perfect Time For Mischief

Artemis strode up to him, standing tall with his hands behind his back, a hint of cold determination flashing in his eyes.

“Where did I go wrong with you that you would betray me and side with Mr. Doyle?”

The assassin in black slowly lowered his head, falling into silence, seemingly trying to calm his emotions.

A full minute passed before he slowly said, “People always strive for a better life. You've already gathered a host of powerful subordinates like Micah and Holden around you. There's simply no chance for me to stand out. Mr. Doyle is different. He has promised me that, as long as I help him fulfill his grand ambition, he will make me the second in command of Tarragon.”

Artemis chuckled softly, “Since he's the one who incited you to betray me, I'm going to let him taste the bitter fruit of his actions today.”

The assassin in black suddenly looked up, his voice trembling as he asked, “What do you mean by that?”

Artemis gave him a sidelong glance, saying lightly, “Half an hour ago, I had one of my men disguise himself as you and went to Sofie's place to kidnap Ms. Hoffman. Sofie will surely think that your master is playing a double game now. Their so-called alliance is on the verge of falling apart.”

The assassin in black, overwhelmed by fear, instinctively swung his arm toward Artemis.

“Watch out!” came Bailey's voice from the left.

Her voice was followed by several silver needles slicing through the darkness, aimed straight at the face, neck, and heart of the assassin in black.

The opponent blocked two, but in the end, he could only watch helplessly as the last one pierced his heart.

The sound of breathing abruptly ceased, and the man in black fell to the ground with a loud thud.

Bailey rushed forward with large strides, reaching out to pat him all over.

“He was holding poison in his hand. You didn't get contaminated with it, did you?”

Perhaps she was too anxious, her fingers seemed to grow a mind of their own, lingering around his lower abdomen several times.

The man's breathing suddenly became heavy.

Under the cover of the dark night and the howling wind, mischief was on the horizon.

He then casually took a bottle from her waist and scattered its contents carelessly on the assassin's body.

After eradicating all traces of the murder, he carried her and climbed up a large tree trunk.

It appeared that Bailey had caught onto his intentions. Her pretty face flushed bright red instantly, and she glared at him, remarking, “You're becoming more and more absurd. Planning outdoor activities this late at night... Do you think this is the right time to do this?”

Artemis let out two scoffs.

“Who cares? You're just teasing me. Do you think I'm incapable? Since you're so enthusiastic about it, I'll fulfill your wish.”

“Art— Mm...”

The angry cursing suddenly stopped.

In the end, she gradually began to compromise.

As his antics nearly drove her to the point of fainting, she couldn't help but murmur, “Take it easy. Don't end up messing up the important stuff.”

“Mmm...”

Although he agreed verbally, he didn't agree to it in his mind.

Screw the important stuff.

He felt that what he was doing now—loving her, cherishing her, teasing her—was what he should be doing most in his life.

The sky was beginning to brighten.

In another small town, Dominic stayed awake all night.

“How's it going? Have you heard anything from Sofie? What's she thinking?”

“Mr. Doyle, there has been no recent progress with the person negotiating with her. It seems they haven't figured it out yet. Maybe you could wait a little longer.”

Wait?

Dominic's expression darkened.

He couldn't wait any longer.

Sofie held nearly twice as much power as him, and if that madwoman truly initiated a battle at the foot of the mountain, his chances of winning were almost nonexistent.

He didn't betray Tarragon just to quarrel with this woman.

Now, success was just a step away. If he were to fall at the foot of the mountain, he would not rest in peace even in death.

He could not to war.

He certainly won't wait for the war to start.

He had to persuade that woman, even if it means he gets a smaller share when the territory is divided.

“Where's Nighthawk? Summon him.”

A moment later, a respectful voice reported from outside, “Mr. Doyle, Nighthawk left early this morning and has not returned yet.”

Dominic furrowed his brows, a hint of displeasure flashing in his eyes.

“Send someone to find him. What's he thinking to disappear at a time like this? Doesn't he realize how serious the situation is now?”

“Yes, sir.”

After a while, another urgent report came from outside.

“Mr. Doyle, bad news! Sofie has already rallied her forces and is preparing to wage war against us.”

Dominic sprang up from his chair and strode over to the door. He reached out and swung it open.

“What did you say? That crazy woman is preparing to wage war against me?”

“Y-Yes. What do you think we should do about the situation?”

The crowd in the courtyard was growing, all waiting for the great elder to make the final decision.

Dominic gritted his teeth ferociously and shouted to the outside, “Send someone to Sofie's place. Tell her I want to have a serious talk with her. Meet me at the lookout point in half an hour.”

“Yes, sir.”

...

On the distant mountaintop, Bailey was leaning softly against Artemis, her eyes heavy with sleep.
