"Annie, our little one..." Louisa watched her daughter's silhouette fade away, turning anxiously to her husband. "What should we do?"

Gabby, frustrated, took a drag from his cigarette. "Where on earth is our eldest?"

"I have no idea. May's keeping tight-lipped. She only says she'll make Conner pay and wants to keep Annie away from him." Louisa was at a loss. "What if they end up enemies over some guy?"

Annie sat in her room, a photo of her and her sister on the table. May was stunning, an art student with a dancer's grace. She had the elegance of a swan— poised, dignified, and always in the spotlight.

When Emmery was around, she ruled Newtown with an iron fist. The Martins owed their rise to May, as she was the reason the Nettletons took the struggling Martins under their wing.

Their parents always wanted Annie to be like her sister-a refined young lady- but she was always a bit of a wild child. May would say, "Mom, Dad, let Annie be. As long as she's happy, that's all that matters. I've got the Martins covered. I just want my sister to be happy."

Annie was closest to her sister because May always had her back.

"Sis, I don't want you seeing Emmery," Annie said. "I saw him fighting in the street, almost beating someone to death. We couldn't even walk by."

May confronted Emmery immediately. "Why are you fighting again?"

A few words later, May, furious, snapped, "You scared my sister! Can't I ask why?" The next day, Emmery came to apologize in person.
