Chapter 1636

She flashed a smile, opened the passenger door, and hopped in. Turning to the staff lingering outside, she called out, "Thanks for your hard work, everyone! Go home and get some rest. See you tomorrow, Director Grant." Milka waved cheerfully at Director Grant.

Before anyone could blink, Mars strode over and wrapped his hand around Milka's, the same one she'd been using to wave goodbye. Under everyone's watchful eyes, the "driver" just took her hand and walked away with her like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Director Grant was left standing there, looking completely baffled. Who the heck was this guy, barging in like that?

Inside the car, Mars shot her a look. "So now I'm your driver? Not bad for a Colonel."

Milka pulled her hand back and buckled her seatbelt. "What was I supposed to say 'Hey everyone, this is my ex-boyfriend'?"

"Drop the 'ex,"" Mars snapped, annoyed. "Hate that word."

"So... just a friend?"

Mars squinted at her. “Milka, you're doing this on purpose, aren't you?"

Milka let out a dismissive snort and turned away to watch the neon lights streak by outside the window. The city looked so alive-almost unreal.

She rolled down the window, letting the buttery streetlights wash over her face. The shadows of night framed her profile, and Mars kept sneaking glances—she looked like a painting, caught between light and dark.

Milka leaned against the door, closed her eyes, and let the summer breeze play with her hair. For a moment, she could almost pretend she was home again.
