Chapter 231
An “Indifferent” Way of Interaction
Simon enjoyed a sound sleep at the Austin’s place. But before dawn, he was awakened by the noise downstairs.
Although he did not have the habit of getting up early, he was always alert when sleeping and would be awakened by slight noises. He got up and went to the window to look downstairs.
The snow had already stopped, and a large area in the courtyard had been cleaned out. The place that had been covered in snow yesterday now revealed the original color of the ground. The people of the Austin family had already begun to exercise.
Simon watched them run around in circles. It was so cold today, but they seemed to be completely unaware of it. They even seemed to be energetic and enthusiastic.
Someone knocked on the door. Simon turned to open the door, only to see his young wife yawning outside. “You’re awake too?” Silvia asked.
Simon replied, “I just woke up.” Silvia said, “Wash up and go downstairs to take a look.”
“Alright.” Simon rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand. Although he still wanted to sleep, he
couldn’t in this environment.
The two of them quickly washed up, put on thick coats, and went downstairs. As expected, they saw that the servants were busy preparing for breakfast.
After the morning exercise, everyone would come back for breakfast. In addition, there were many people in the family, so it would take a long time to get breakfast ready.
“Why are you up so early?” Zain had obviously finished exercising and walked in from the outside. He only wore a thin sweater. When he saw them, he said indifferently.
“We used to get up even earlier. Don’t you remember?” Silvia replied. Then she added, “Where is grandpa?”
Silvia remembered that her grandfather was always the first to get up in the family. Considering the old man’s strict way of living, no one else in the family dared to complain about it.
Silvia asked about her grandfather because she wanted to say goodbye to him before leaving today.
Maybe she had been away from the place for too long, so she felt a bit uneasy living here. It was better for her to leave early now that it stopped snowing.
“He’s probably still sleeping,” Zain raised his wrist to look at his watch and said.
After figuring out what she wanted to ask, Zain continued, “Grandpa is not like before. He has trouble falling asleep all night, which has disrupted his biological clock. So he doesn’t sleep regularly like before.”
Silvia thought, grandpa has trouble sleeping? After thinking carefully, Silvia realized that when she saw her grandfather yesterday, she noticed that his complexion was not as good as before, especially his eyes, but she didn’t realize he had been troubled by insomnia.
Silvia thought, is it because grandpa is growing older?
“Let’s have breakfast first.” Zain took the handkerchief from the servant and wiped his hands. Then
he asked, “Are you planning to leave today?”
Silvia nodded, saying, “Well, it has stopped snowing, and… I have things to do back home, so…”
“Okay, then you can leave later. I’ll tell grandpa about it.” Zain was quite straightforward.
“There’s no hurry. I can wait for grandpa to wake up and tell him.” Silvia had come in a hurry. So
she thought it might be rude to leave without saying goodbye to her grandfather.
Back then, because she wanted to escape, she left without hesitation or any words. However, during
these few years, she had thought about the time spent with the Austin family. Although she had felt
tormented at that time, she occasionally felt happy too. In addition, this time, her grandfather
seemed to be very different.
“It’s up to you.” After cleaning his hands, Zain walked straight to the dining table and sat down. The
servants had already brought the breakfast over.
Silvia glanced at Simon, and the two of them sat down together. Everyone remained extraordinarily
quiet at the dining table, and only the sound of tableware touching the plate could be heard
occasionally
Simon did not speak either. Silvia had told him before that no one was allowed to speak during
mealtime or bedtime in the Austin family. They might do things differently outside, but at home, no
one would speak while eating.
Today, he saw the scene with his own eyes.
After taking a few bites absentmindedly, Silvia put down her fork and knife and said, “I’m going to
see grandfather.”
“Okay,” Zain lowered his eyes and replied indifferently.
Perhaps that was the way people in the Austin family interacted with each other, but as an outsider, Simon could see something different and interesting.
The people of the Austin family looked very cold. Even though they had not seen each other for many years, they did not show much enthusiasm when they met. They talked and acted indifferently as if they didn’t care about the meeting at all.
But after careful observation, Simon noticed that they were actually very considerate.
For example, although there was no air conditioner in the room, the bedding for Silvia and Simon had been thickened and newly changed. However, no one said anything about it. The members of the Austin family just did it quietly.
Besides, the breakfast was originally very simple and contained nothing other than oatmeal and some bread. However, there was an extra sandwich, fried egg, and milk on the table. Moreover, little sandwiches and fried eggs were provided. It was clear that they were specially provided for Silvia and Simon.
Freddie came with Silvia and Simon yesterday. He had originally planned to leave and find a hotel for himself after sending Silvia and Simon to the Austin’s place. Thus, he could come to pick them up when they planned to leave. However, Simon received a message from Freddie last night, saying that the Austin family had arranged for him to stay so that he could be ready for Simon’s orders at any time.
The Austin family did not say anything and always looked cold and distant, but in fact, they were thoughtful.
In comparison, the Palmer family was the exact opposite. On the surface, they were always friendly and caring for each other. But in reality, they had done tons of filthy things that were beyond speech.
If Simon had the right to choose, he would rather choose the Austin family, who were cold on the
surface but warm inside. It would be more relaxing to get along with such people.
Simon looked at Zain thoughtfully, who happened to raise his head. The two men’s eyes met, and
they paused for a moment. Then Simon smiled slightly.
On the other side…
Silvia came upstairs. She was about to knock on the door, but after thinking for a second, she held the knob on the door and turned it. As expected, the door opened.
For many years, Silvia’s grandfather had the habit of sleeping without locking the door. Silvia had no idea whether he was awake or asleep at that moment, so she carefully poked her head in and took a look.
“Is it Silvia?”
Hearing the hoarse voice, Silvia paused for a moment and nodded. “Grandpa, you’re awake?”
Silvia opened the door and walked in, while Marc turned over on the bed, moved his body to sit up, and leaned against the bed.
Simon found a pillow and placed it behind his back, making him feel more comfortable. Then she stood at Marc’s bedside.
This was how it had been in the past. Ever since Silvia was young, she had been standing whenever
she answered Marc’s questions. It had somehow become a habit of hers.
However, Marc raised his eyelids and glanced at her. He moved his hand and gestured for her to sit down. “Sit here and let me … take a good look.”
His voice was no longer as sonorous as before, which was an obvious sign that he was inevitably getting old!
Silvia sat down next to the bed and carefully sized up her grandfather. Marc’s face was covered wit] spots, which were appearing with age, and his eyes were not as clear and sharp as before. Marc’s brows were slightly furrowed, and under his eyes was a large eye bag. It seemed that he had suffered from long-term insomnia.
“Grandpa, are you having trouble sleeping?” She asked softly.
