Chapter 865

She lowered her gaze, lashes sweeping over her cheeks, and let out a quiet sigh. "Charlie, you need to be careful too. I met someone here—someone who probably snuck in years ago. He's been hiding in plain sight for four years now, and he's already given up on ever getting out."

Before she could say more, someone walked over and gave her a sharp once- over. "You, come with me."

To fit in, Clara had smeared her face with dark makeup. With only her bright eyes giving her away, no one would guess she was a woman.

She nodded at Charlie and trailed after the guard.

"There's a big inspection tonight," the guard said. "Room 211, after ten. You're patrolling this hallway. Don't let anyone cause trouble."

The hallway was lined with tiny rooms, each holding people brought here for drug trials. This new batch was all settled in. There were supposed to be ten of them— now, with Clara and Charlie, eight remained.

Clara nodded and glanced toward the far corner, where a little girl was huddled up.

The girl hadn't moved since her physical. She just sat there, curled in the corner. Once the guard left, Clara made her way over to the girl.

The little girl's face was paper white, and there was a pool of blood underneath her.

Clara's chest tightened. She was about to crouch down and say something when another guard strode over.
