Chapter 184

-Ava’s POV-

“Hold on, let me recap and make sure I’m actually up to speed,” Isabella said, pulling a pillow closer to her chest. “Grayson received a message from the person behind all this killing just before the shooting. But wait–before I continue–don’t you think we should come up with a name for this guy?”

I glanced up from the blank page in front of me, raising an eyebrow at her. “How do you even know it’s a guy?”

“Because it’s the obvious conclusion,” she said with a dramatic eye–roll. “Why would a woman be doing this? I mean, I support women’s empowerment and all that, but this feels… unlikely plus whoever it is has a lot of power and backing and I don’t think that a woman could wield this amount of power. Whoever this person is, they’re a master planner,” Her eyes lit up as if she had just thought of something brilliant. “I’ve got it!” Then, just as quickly, she shook her head. “Nope. Never mind. I don’t got it. Back to the recap.”

I sighed, turning my attention back to the paper in front of me, scribbling down a few words that didn’t quite fit.

“Okay, so Grayson got shot, and then this guy sent another message to his phone. It said, ‘You’re next,‘ which explains why security has tripled and why there are now five men standing outside this room like we’re in a warzone. Then there was the meeting where Grayson announced there was a mole, but you took over and the meeting ended up going well but afterwards, Ivan told only you that he knew who the mole was and it was Elaine?”

I hummed in response, staring at the words I’d written. They still didn’t feel right, and I was about to cross them out when Isabella yanked the paper out of my hands.

“What could you possibly be writing that’s more important than this?!” she demanded, waving the paper in my face. “Elaine is the freaking mole, and you didn’t tell Grayson about it?”

I let out a long sigh. “Elaine isn’t the mole. She might act suspicious sometimes, but she’s not the one feeding information to our enemy. That’s why I shut Ivan down immediately when he suggested it.”

“How are you so sure?” she asked, narrowing her eyes.

“Because Elaine’s issues started with the death of her parents. It traumatized her. She’s terrified of death. That’s why, even when she’s mad at Grayson, she still shows up. She doesn’t want to risk not saying goodbye to him, something she never go to do with her parents. And she wouldn’t get involved with someone who’s killing people–it goes against everything she fears.” I paused for a moment before adding, “Not to mention, she’s Grayson’s cousin. Do you know how much power that gives her in this world? Elaine loves being at the top. She wouldn’t help someone who’s hell–bent on seeing Grayson fall because that would mean she’d fall too. Now, can I have my paper back?”

Isabella stared at me for a moment, clearly trying to process my explanation. Reluctantly, she handed the paper back. “How do

She was attacked, yes but because she’s a powerful witch, she managed to hold her ground long enough for Grayson and some of his warriors to get there.
