Chapter 42 Come and Go as They Please
“Whoa!” Julia suddenly shrieked, pointing out of the car window. “Claire, look! There are so many cars parked here today!”
Claire had noticed that as well and nodded. “Yes. It seems like people have
moved in today.”
Julia hissed as she narrowed her eyes and stroked her chin in faux contemplation. “I don’t really get it. No one else was living here two days ago, so why are there so many people here now? It’s like a pop–up market. All of a sudden, they’re gone. Then, they’re back again just as suddenly.”
Realization seemed to have struck her as she looked up to stare at Claire in shock. “They seem to treat this place like a hotel, coming and going as they please.”
Claire was tempted to ignore Julia as she continued to chatter on.
When the elevator arrived at their floor, they found the door to the unit next to theirs open. They could hear someone moving about some furniture. Julia curiously peeked into the apartment and was stunned by the luxurious decor found inside.
“Oh my god! This must have cost a lot! The entire place is renovated to a traditional aesthetic.”
Julia grabbed Claire’s sleeve. “Look at the painting on the wall. Is that real? How expensive is it?”
Claire was somewhat familiar with classical paintings, but she would need to

Claire was somewhat familiar with classical paintings, but she would need to be closer to the painting to authenticate it. She shook her head and dragged Julia back to their apartment. “I don’t know either. Let’s go home. Stop
staring.”
She had just taken a few steps away when she stopped and turned around. Standing at the doorway, she carefully examined the apartment inside with a frown. “Why does this place look so familiar? It looks like Mr. Vanderbilt’s
place.”
Just then, a tall man walked out from behind the divider. The man had a pair of white gloves on as he held a white vase. Upon seeing Claire, he smiled and gently said, “What a coincidence.”
Victor, who was standing behind the divider, nearly choked on his saliva wher
