“Elsa is in this hospital too. If you just apologize to her sincerely, ask for her forgiveness, and show real remorse in front of Wendy, I’ll give you one last chance. I’ll help you deal with this.”

Lily felt like John was about to crush her jaw.

She gasped painfully several times, gripping his fingers with both hands, trying to lessen the pressure. But the pain only grew worse.

She was on an IV drip, and because John was too focused on scolding her to care, her other arm had been yanked, tugging out the needle from the back of her hand. She drew a sharp breath at the sting.

She lay frozen on the bed for a moment before she could find her voice again.

“I told you–I can prove I’m innocent. I wasn’t drunk, and I didn’t crash into Wendy. She had someone deliberately ram into me, then forced alcohol down my throat to make it look like I was driving drunk. I have a clear conscience. I will never apologize to Elsa. Let me go. I did nothing wrong. You have no right to lecture me on behalf of your precious Elsa!”

Her hospital gown had loose sleeves. Because she was struggling to pry his hand off, the sleeve fell back, revealing her pale forearm.

He looked down and saw a long, angry gash–at least fifteen centimeters–on her arm.

The movement had reopened the wound. Blood seeped out again, a jarring red against her porcelain skin.

He also noticed the back of her left hand–where the IV needle had been pulled out–was dotted with blood. Just looking at it made him wince.

A sharp pain twisted in his chest.

He didn’t like seeing Lily hurt.

For a moment, he wanted to pull her into his arms, hold her tight, kiss her deeply, and ask her if it hurt.

But then he remembered the sight of Wendy covered in blood when he rushed to the hospital with Elsa. He forced that urge back down.
