The CEO Gets What He Wants
Chapter 14
“I don't know who sent these,” Avery repeated patiently.
She didn't want to hurt Zayne's feelings or leave a stain on her life.
Alas, Zayne's fury sprang to life. “You don't know who sent these? Are you serious? Do you think I'm a fool, Avery? You returned barely a week ago and already found a man. No man will gift you expensive air-flown flowers if you are in a relationship!”
Avery couldn't stand his accusatory gaze.
After all, she didn't do anything wrong.
She wasn't lying when she said she had no idea who sent the flowers.
“I'll head to work alone.” In the end, Avery remained calm and tossed the bouquet into a nearby dustbin. She didn't even bother sparing it another look.
Zayne stared at Avery, who calmly crossed the street and headed for the subway station. His fists balled up.
Her figure soon entered the subway station and disappeared from sight.
Zayne remained rooted in his spot as anger brewed in his heart. Whipping around, he punched the streetlamp in anger. Pain flared up his arm, but it did nothing to calm him down.
It looks like I'll only feel secure after I marry her.
In the office, Avery couldn't focus on work. Her mind went wild when she was taking the subway to work.
She had a suspect in mind, but it was too absurd to be true.
Back in Hallsbay, Cayden called her phone once late at night. That proved that he had access to her phone number and address as he was her employer.
It was easy for the boss to get his subordinates' information.
Avery was lost in thought when her phone rang.
It was a WhatsApp message.
Zayne: I'm sorry for acting rashly.
Zayne: I was afraid I'd lose you.
Zayne: Please don't get mad at me. We can talk in person.
No one would be happy to get suspected by one's other half.
At noon, Nina joined Avery for lunch at the cafeteria. “Zayne wants me to coax you. He said he got jealous and made you upset.”
Avery munched on her food and said nothing.
“Hey, stop torturing him.” Nina chuckled gaily. “He cares a lot about you. Showing his jealousy proves that he loves you. You have no idea how much he adores you. I think you're far more important to him than our parents and me. You're his one and only.”
Avery pondered over it as her fury faded away.
If I were in his shoes and caught a girl giving Zayne a gift secretly, I'll lose my temper and start doubting him, too.
That afternoon, the door to Yulissa Yantz's office in the design department remained open. She was the head of the department.
Avery kept heading to the pantry to get herself water and would walk past it every time.
“Can someone deliver this for me?” Yulissa asked without lifting her head.
“I'll do it!” Avery offered as she walked past her office yet again.
Everyone shot her grateful looks.
They were busy with their work, so it would be perfect if Avery could deal with the menial tasks.
This time, she was tasked to deliver something to the CEO's office.
That was the chance Avery had been waiting for.
She took the elevator to the top floor and entered the CEO's office.
Avery placed the blueprint on the desk but didn't leave right away.
“Anything else?” Cayden asked. As he kept his gaze focused on the design, she couldn't see his expression. His fingers brushed across the large blueprint on the desk slowly.
He looked exceptionally serious at work.
“Thank you, Mr. Moore,” Avery said carefully.
Her heart raced after she said that out loud.
Avery, do you have a death wish? What if your suspicion is wrong? Changing the topic abruptly is too awkward!
To her surprise, Cayden's fingers halted as he lifted his head to stare at her in an imposing manner. “You found the master who fed you. Not bad. You're not as foolish as I thought.”
Avery was rendered speechless.
I'm not a fool. Why is he referring to himself as “master?” Fed by my master? I'm a human being!
She didn't say that out loud, for he was her employer, after all.
Avery asked, “Why would you do that, Mr. Moore? I don't understand.”
“It wasn't easy to take care of Rory and Zach,” Cayden explained matter-of-factly. “I slept on your bed after getting drunk. I'm really sorry about that. You wouldn't have fallen sick if I hadn't done that.”
Avery froze.
I barely spent five minutes with him after I caught a cold in Hallsbay. How did he find out about my condition?
“Thank you.” Avery squirmed awkwardly. “The rewards I received are more than enough. Please stop sending me more stuff. As your employee, it is my responsibility to help you out.”
She was obviously trying to keep a distance from him.
Suddenly, Cayden snorted out loud. Arching a brow arrogantly, he asked, “Who gave you the confidence to assume that I sent you stuff?”
Avery's cheeks flushed crimson red.
I was just worried that Boss would send more stuff and upset Zayne again.
