Chapter 498 Could It Be Avery

Although Avery had met Xander a few times, she did not know him well.

He was a charming but vicious man who had a devilish character, and his smile never really reached his eyes.

Word was that he was the leader of Ackleton's underworld and controlled the entire city's crime syndicates.

It was no surprise for such a man to be exceptionally ruthless.

But how did Nina offend Xander? She only went to get takeout.

A sense of unease rose in Avery's heart, and she called Cayden in a fluster.

Due to the condition of her legs, she was not able to go anywhere.

As such, she was hoping that Cayden would be able to do something about it, given that he and Xander were friends who were on rather good terms with each other.

After learning what had happened from Avery, Cayden agreed to help readily and promised to bring Nina back safely.

Avery could hear music and bustling background noises on the other end of the line.

Feeling curious, she asked, “Cayden, what are you doing? Why is it so noisy there?”

Cayden had walked to a quiet corner to answer the call, but it was inevitable for his phone to pick up some sounds. “I'm at a banquet. I'll call Xander shortly to ask him to release Nina. I'll go back to be with you as soon as the event ends.”

“Okay. Don't drink too much,” Avery reminded softly.

“Yup, I know. You should get some rest too. When you recover, let's go on a vacation with the kids.” Cayden had a gentle look on his face as he spoke to Avery.


Nicole, who was watching the man from a distance, noticed his tender expression and could not help but feel suspicious. At the same time, jealousy was flowing through her like lava.

She walked toward Cayden and wrapped her arms around his before saying in a loud and coquettish voice, “Cayden, I've been looking all around for you. My parents want us to go over. Grandma's birthday celebration is starting soon, and everyone is waiting for us.”

Avery could hear every word the woman was saying through the phone, loud and clear.

Waves of pain hit her heart as she tightened her grip on her phone.

Even though she knew that Cayden was merely putting on an act, she was unable to stop her heart from aching.

Holding back her tears, the woman said, “Cayden, you should get going. Come back soon. I'll wait for you.”

Before Cayden could reply, Avery had already hung up.

The man's expression darkened when he heard the dial tone.

With murderous intent burning in his eyes, he looked toward Nicole, who was feigning innocence.

Nicole's heart was almost leaping out of her chest.

At that moment, a dangerous aura surrounded Cayden, and Nicole felt as if the man was an angry predator who was about to rip her into pieces. Her entire body turned stiff, and a shiver ran down her spine.

“Cayden, what's wrong? Why are you looking at me like that? Don't scare me...” said Nicole in a pitiful tone, biting her lip as she hugged the man's arm.

She did not expect Cayden to have such a strong reaction as all she had done was disrupt his call.

That further confirmed her suspicions that he was speaking to a woman, and it was very likely to be a woman whom he cared deeply for.

Could it be Avery?

Could that woman still be alive?

All colors drained from Nicole's face as she thought about that possibility, and the smile on her face stiffened.

The next moment, Cayden tamped down his fury and was back to his elegant self.

He shrugged Nicole's hand off subtly and said coldly, “My employee got into some trouble with the CEO of Gibson Corporation, and I need to take care of it now. Sorry, Ms. Nicole. I don't think I can stay till the end of the banquet. I will let Old Mr. Lambert and Old Mrs. Lambert know. I hope you understand.”

Nicole was feeling anxious and frustrated at the same time. Her sixth sense was telling her that things were not as simple as they seemed.

If something had happened to an employee, he could get Xavier or someone else from the upper management to settle it. Why would he need to handle it personally? He's the CEO!

Although Nicole was filled with doubts and displeasure, she forced a polite smile and said, “You can leave first if you're busy. My grandparents are understanding people. They wouldn't be mad at you for that. However, it's quite a pity as I have prepared some performances for the banquet later on, and I was hoping you could give me some pointers...”

“There's always next time. I'm sure I will get another chance to watch you perform, Ms. Nicole. If there's nothing else, I'll be going now,” Cayden replied indifferently.

After Cayden said his goodbyes to George and Fiona, Nicole walked him out of the banquet hall while holding his arm affectionately.
