However, the examiners' attitudes toward Avery clearly improved during that round of interrogation.

Evangeline, who volunteered to testify for Avery, now sat beside her, making her feel a little less helpless.

Nevertheless, Yulissa still stubbornly accused Avery. “I don't care how she denies it. She cheated because I saw the ball of paper drop out of her hand!”

“Sir, I didn't cheat.”

As soon as Avery finished her sentence, Evangeline immediately nodded. “Sir, I can vouch for her. She's telling the truth. I saw Avery place the notes into her bag.”

Sensing the situation turning against her, Yulissa hastily argued, “Sir, I suspect these two have a relationship. They must've been friends for a long time, so she's giving false testimony to help Avery.”

Evangeline uttered to the examiners solemnly, “That's not true. Ms. Rumpley and I became acquainted here at the exam hall, and we have never met before. The reason why I'm testifying for her is because I can't stand a certain someone trying to frame and slander her. I saw Ms. Yantz toss the notes under Ms. Rumpley's chair.”

Yulissa cursed inwardly. Sh*t! I didn't expect this girl to be a witness. This is not good for me.

Her eyes darted around. Then, she slammed the table to cover up her guilt. “You two must have an unspeakable relationship! Sir, there are so many students in the classroom, but why was she the only one who witnessed what happened? If she really saw something, why didn't she say anything in the classroom and instead wait until she arrived in the interrogation room to accuse me of framing Avery? This is such a joke! Why should I set her up?”

Evangeline fell silent as she was rendered speechless.

In fact, she didn't know if there were any grudges between Yulissa and Avery. She chose to keep quiet in the classroom because she didn't want to invite trouble. However, after making a phone call, she unexpectedly volunteered to get herself involved in that dispute.

Avery said calmly, “Dear examiners, Yulissa and I work for Trident Group's design department. Her employee ID is two—seven—zero—three, while mine is two—seven—eight—nine. We do have some personal feud when we were at work, so I can fully suspect she's taking this opportunity to get back at me. If you don't believe me, you can contact Trident Group's HR department to verify my statement.”

After receiving Cayden's consolation and assurance, Avery was now exceptionally composed.

In contrast, Evangeline gaped in astonishment.

She didn't expect Avery was already Trident Group's employee. I can't believe I even encouraged her to apply for a position at Trident Group with me before the examination.

At that moment, Evangeline felt her cheeks flushed.

The examiners exchanged glances. Then, the one in the middle spoke. “I will contact Trident Group afterward to enquire whether you two have a strife.”

Yulissa's right eyelid twitched. She suddenly got up from her seat and shrieked, “Sir, we aren't even on the same rank, and there's no competition between us, so how could there be any personal grudges? I did see her cheating. As a virtuous and disciplined examinee, I reported her because I couldn't stand her despicable behavior. I'm definitely not falsely accusing her! Sir, I must go home now. Otherwise, my parents will be worried.”

After saying that, Yulissa picked up her bag and got ready to leave.

She had to get away as soon as possible. Otherwise, all her effort might go to waste.

The few examiners were also exhausted by now.

They investigated for half a day without getting to the bottom of that matter, so after a brief internal discussion, they decided to let Yulissa leave first.

Yulissa, wearing high heels, haughtily stood up and said self-righteously, “Dear examiners, you must punish Avery for her cheating behavior. She's a person with questionable character, cheating in the examination even while she's pregnant. I wonder if her child will be ashamed of her in the future. If someone like her doesn't get severely penalized, it would be very unfair to the other students.”

“Yulissa, quit making wild accusations!” Avery was enraged after listening to Yulissa's insulting comment.

She got to her feet as well and grasped Yulissa's sleeve. “You can't leave. You cannot go anywhere until this matter is cleared up!”

“Let go of me, you imbecile!” Yulissa was strong. She glanced at Avery disdainfully and effortlessly yanked the latter's hand away. Then, she strode toward the door in her high heels.

Avery knew if she allowed Yulissa to leave just like that, it would be even more difficult for her to clear her name.

Feeling desperate, she chased after Yulissa and grabbed the latter's arm. In her agitation, Avery even lost her cool. “Yulissa, I never did anything wrong. How can you just walk away after falsely accusing me?”

“I falsely accused you? What a joke! Stop acting pitifully. I won't fall for your pretense! Remember to abide by the rules next time, and don't assume you can pass the Certified Professional Constructor examination by cheating. How shameless!” Yulissa forcefully shook off Avery's hand.

As she was eager to get away from Avery, Yulissa exerted too much force and accidentally pushed Avery out of the room.

Avery slipped and almost fell to the ground.

At that critical moment, a pair of muscular arms abruptly wrapped around her waist, and that man pulled her into his embrace, saving her from falling.
