"Kris," Thalassa whispered, her heart pounding inside her chest.

Kris took slow steps toward her, his expression utterly broken as he stared at her. "I should've known this was too good to be true."

His breath hitched in his throat, his heart squeezing so painfully that he thought it was going to implode. He wanted to believe his eyes were deceiving him, but the evidence was right in front of him.

His fingers twitched at his side, his jaw clenching painfully. "Getting back together with me...everything you said about letting the past go and giving me a second chance... I should have known it was all a lie. You lied to me. Why?"

Despite her racing heart, Thalassa glared at him. This wasn't how she wanted him to find out about her plans, but she refused to let herself feel guilty.
