Chapter 17 I Have Learned to Be Grateful

Just as Warren was about to speak, Vera interrupted, "Dad, Patrick, it's time for lunch."

After finishing their meal, Vera talked with her parents for a long while. In the afternoon, Patrick took Vera and left.

As they drove away, Vera sat in the passenger seat, opening the window and looking back at her parents through the rearview mirror.

She was getting farther and farther away from them.

Tears welled up in Vera's eyes, and she frequently rubbed them. Patrick sat beside her, understanding her emotions.

He sped up and drove out of the Royce Community. It wasn't until they could no longer see the white building that Vera closed the car window and Patrick slowed down.

"Do you always talk so much at home?" Patrick asked.

"Not necessarily. It's just that it's your first time at my house, and my parents are meeting you for the first time. I am your wife and their daughter. If I didn't keep talking, it would have been awkward for all of us." It was the first time Patrick heard Vera refer to herself as his "wife." It felt like a child pretending to be an adult while the adults watched. However, she wasn't wrong. She was his wife. "Anyway, thank you."

After three days of marriage, they had their first peaceful conversation.
