Beyond the next 20 miles, the land would become a barren wasteland. There would be no phone signals, no Wi–Fi–just an endless expanse of cold, eerie silence.

Robin glanced at his watch. Shirley should have arrived in Harmonfield by now.

His thoughts drifted toward her, and just then, his phone buzzed, signaling an incoming call.

It was Shirley.

Her radiant face filled the screen, and Robin felt a warmth spreading through his chest.

To love someone deeply was a happiness that surpassed simply being loved.

In the middle of this frigid, freezing world, the thought of Shirley’s love made Robin feel as though a gentle spring breeze had washed over him.

He answered the video call, and in an instant, his beloved appeared before him.

Though the image flickered and the connection was weak, Robin could clearly see Shirley’s bright smile and the happiness glowing in her eyes.

She giggled nervously, a hint of shyness in her voice before she added, “I’ve said so much. Don’t laugh at me, alright?”

Shirley couldn’t hold back any longer. She poured out her feelings, surprised at how bold she had become in this moment–never imagining she would speak such vulnerable, tender words.
