Chapter 178

Hailey’s eyes were still red as she curled up under the blanket, looking utterly fragile.

Noticing Owen staring at her, she hastily wiped away her tears and lowered her gaze. “Why are you back again?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Owen shut the door and walked toward her, settling beside her on the hospital bed. His rough fingertips traced gently along her soft, porcelain skin as he murmured in a deep, cool voice, “You miss me so much, yet you insist on pretending otherwise.”

Hailey pressed her lips together, avoiding his gaze.

Owen caught her chin, forcing her to look at him. His cold, piercing eyes locked onto hers as he asked, “Hailey, I’ll ask you one last time—are you really sure you want to leave me?”

She was trapped in his gaze, unable to utter a single word.

The air between them grew cerily still.

Hailey knew that as long as she hesitated, as long as she didn’t say she was sure, Owen would never walk away–no matter what they had to face.

But that wasn’t what she wanted.

He had been born into a life of privilege, living in luxury, standing above the masses. Yet if the world discovered his love for her–his cousin–his life would be shattered beyond repair.

He would be condemned, his name dragged through the mud, and the empire he built would crumble under the weight of scandal. Hailey understood how brutal public opinion could be.

Taking a deep breath, she looked at him, eyes red–rimmed but steady. “Owen, you’re destined for a brilliant future,” she said softly.

But deep in her heart, she thought, ‘Even if that future doesn’t include me, I will always love you, always support you. I’ll bury my love for you deep in my heart, where no one will ever find it.’

Owen held her gaze for a long moment before sighing, his lashes lowering.

“Hailey,” he said, his voice quiet but unwavering. “You really let me down.”

No words could have cut deeper. Hailey felt herself shatter.

She sat there, stunned, as he rose to his feet. His tall, lean frame drifted away, his figure fading before her eyes–just like he was fading from her life.

Hailey had already signed her discharge papers.
