Franklin had already shifted his focus back to the book when he casually commented,

“Your annotations are quite good.”

This was a compliment, but Maggie pretended not to hear it. She grabbed the hairdryer and

went back into the bathroom to dry her hair.

By the time she finished her skincare routine and lay down on the other side of the bed to

rest, Franklin was still reading.

He didn’t fall asleep immediately, and Maggie had no idea when he eventually did, as she fell asleep quickly.

The next morning, Maggie woke up early. The sun had just risen, but the other side of the

bed was already empty. The room was quiet, and Franklin was nowhere to be seen.

She was almost certain now that he hadn’t slept here last night–he must have gone to Julia’s room instead.

Was he that eager, unable to control himself even for a night?

After breakfast, Maggie packed her things, grabbed her suitcase, and was ready to leave.

As she opened the door, she overheard Isabella’s voice in the hallway: “Aunt Julie is so bad.

She promised to sleep with me last night, but when I woke up in the middle of the night, she

went back to her own room.”

Isabella was apparently complaining to Aunt Sara.

Upon hearing this, Maggie could confirm that Franklin hadn’t stayed in her room last night

but had gone to Julie’s instead. It was evident they had spent the night together.

Isabella then saw her dragging her suitcase out: “Mom?”

“Mm.” Maggie snapped out of her thoughts, closing the door behind her. “Mom has work to
