Brandon held her for ages, feeling a peace he hadn't felt in forever. He didn't want to let her go, and honestly, he didn't plan to.

He couldn't remember how many years it had been since he'd last watched the sunset or simply observed the passerby.

Since college, his life had been on fast-forward, with work hogging the spotlight.

Even during the two years he was married, and the two years post-divorce, his stride through life had never slowed, and as such, he had missed and overlooked much.

After a while, Brandon finally let go of Sophia, but not entirely. Instead, he just gazed at her quietly.

"Sophia," he said in a hoarse whisper, "I'm sorry for those two years."

His raspy apology almost drew tears to Sophia's eyes again.

She tried to muster a smile for him, but her eyes betrayed the emotions swirling within.

This bouquet and this "sorry" were like fine sand, slowly filling the cracks wrought

by time— fissures she thought had been buried deep in the years, never to

concern her again.

"Shall we go eat?"
