Brandon glanced up at her with a calm demeanor. "I've got a business rivalry with Harvey Ferber, and Arlene is his Achilles' heel. I'm just looking to exploit that, nothing more."

Sophia turned towards Kent, her eyes filled with inquiry, silently asking him if what Brandon said was true.

Kent pressed his lips together, giving a small nod. "Yeah."

"Harvey Ferber has his sights set on the Starlight Group's docks. So, he kept quiet about saving you, hoping to use you as a bargaining chip with Mr. Crawley. But back then, Mr. Crawley didn't know you were with Harvey. He also wanted a shipping deal with Harvey, but Harvey wanted the docks, and Mr. Crawley wanted the shipping rights. They couldn't find common ground. Just then, Harvey found Arlene, which led him to Starlight Group, and Mr. Crawley saw Arlene as his ticket to a deal with Harvey."

Kent mixed truth with half-truths, trying to justify why he showed her Arlene. "The reason I told you about Arlene and Harvey is because I worry... that you might develop a connection with Arlene and get attached to Harvey's family. When the negotiations get tough, I don't want you blaming Mr. Crawley for using Arlene as leverage against Harvey."

He stumbled a bit, trying to keep his story straight, knowing full well it wasn't his true motive. But he had to persuade Sophia without raising suspicions, just as Brandon wanted.

Brandon gave Kent a look but remained silent, tacitly approving Kent's effort to patch things up.

Sophia frowned slightly, sensing something off in Kent's explanation, but she couldn't pinpoint exactly what. So she nodded, "Oh."

"I won't blame him, don't worry," she reassured.

Kent smiled at her, "That's good to hear."
