Jonathan read the meaning tucked between her lines and studied her silently. Then, without warning, his lips parted in a slow, dazzling smile. The amusement in his eyes softened the edge of his features, giving him an effortless charm that few could match. “With that silver tongue, Miss Holland, you ought to be part of my family.”

Corrine raised an eyebrow, her smile subtle, almost amused. “You flatter me.”

He never intended to pursue the matter tonight. Had he wanted revenge, he would have let the man bludgeon Waldo to death while standing idly by. If a fatality had occurred on his property, at worst, the authorities would have shut him down temporarily for investigation. He would survive it.
