When confronted with Beryl's pleading, I couldn't let out a word. It was as if a lump was stuck in my throat.

"Are you leaving? Mommy, please don't go. I promise I will listen to you and won't be naughty anymore." Then she cupped her hands around my face with her pleading eyes. My eyes welled up with tears as I said in a broken voice, "Baby Beryl has always been a good girl. Mommy loves you."
