“Yorick, sweetheart, can you please disengage from Cyra so we can finish our conversation. Then the two of you can continue,” my mother’s voice says from somewhere behind me.

“I have your results. First, your hormone levels are back to normal, meaning you definitely were given a placebo. I’m guessing the hormones. from your previous implant lasted just long enough for me to confirm your negative pregnancy test,” she says.

I feel the same wave of disappointment in Cyra that I’m feeling. I was excited to start a family with my mate, even if it would be difficult for the next year.

“Now, your test result was negative, but the two of you have only recently completed your mate bond and that is what we need to discuss. I know Kennedy told you that I might not be willing to put you on birth control and she’s right. With your hormone levels normal and your recent marking and mating, it is very likely that you are now pregnant, just not far enough along for it to show on a test. If I understand the agreement you have with Warren, the two of you will be coming here every weekend, correct?”

“Yes,” I say.

She nods. “I’ll check you next weekend and if you’re still negative, we’ll go one more week. If at that time you still show a negative blood test, then I’ll put you on birth control if that’s what you want. For now, if you aren’t actively trying to get pregnant, you need to make sure you use condoms,” she says, looking at me with a question on her face.

“Yeah, I have them,” I say. “Dad made sure we all did.”

“Good. Of course, it’s up to the two of you if you want to use them, but I won’t feel completely comfortable putting you on birth control for two more weeks.”

“Okay, thanks Mom.”

“Of course. I’m going to walk back with you to the packhouse,” she says, as we walk out of the room.

“I need to let your father know that Kennedy and Dr. Walker found that none of the implants that came in that particular shipment had the hormones required to prevent pregnancy. I’ll need to contact the Council and you can expect an investigation. I’m not sure if they will contact one of you or your father since things are a little different in this pack right now. I’ve had Dr. Walker set aside the shipment that was tampered with, the results of Kennedy’s tests, and he’s also collecting the information on who ordered this shipment, when it was ordered, which company they ordered through, and which delivery company was used. The Council will want all of that information when they are to complete their investigation. I also asked Dr. Walker about the possibility of a nurse being involved, but he didn’t feel that was like feels that whoever did this was outside of the pack.
