Ruby’s stomach dropped. “Mack, what’s happening to you?”

She wasn’t sure what had come over Mack, but recalling how long he had been fiddling with her phone, she quickly checked it.

Her heart nearly stopped—the fifty thousand in her account was gone.

She looked at her son, bitterness welling in her eyes.

When he stayed away, life felt lighter. When he came back, it was always about money. She wished he would stop showing up altogether.
