“Sammy?” Helen had just been about to head out to visit Boone at the psychiatric hospital when she saw Samantha running home in tears. “Weren’t you at school? Why are you back all of a sudden?”

Samantha burst into sobs and threw herself into Helen’s arms, choking out the full story of what had happened at school.

“Everyone’s talking about Boone. No matter where I go, people are laughing at me,” she cried. It had gotten to be too much–so she simply ran home.

“Mom, when is Boone coming back?” she sniffled, her voice laced with the faintest trace of blame. “I can’t even stay at school anymore. No matter what I do, people keep whispering behind my back.”

In truth, many students had been quite reasonable–after all, it was her brother who had done something wrong, not her. But Samantha had grown paranoid. Every time someone whispered nearby, she assumed they were gossiping about her.

“Boone’s situation is complicated. It’s not something I can explain in a few words,” Helen said, trying her best to comfort her. “Don’t worry about what others are saying. Just focus on your studies.”

Samantha muttered under her breath, “Boone really messed up. Now I’m the one paying for it.”

If she’d known, she never would’ve let Boone drop her off on the first day of school.

Helen was too preoccupied with Boone to notice the bitterness in her tone. She said, “It’s perfect timing that you’re back. I was just about to visit Boone. Why don’t you come with me?”

Samantha’s expression froze for a second–but she quickly forced a cheerful smile. “Sure. I’ll go with you.”

Helen nodded in satisfaction and headed toward the car, still mumbling, “Boone
