Sean and the others couldn’t even lift their heads after being chewed out by Mr. Samson in front of a freshman girl.

They quickly picked up on the subtle cues–this pretty new student clearly held a special place in Mr. Samson’s heart.

“Hey there,” Sean said with a forced smile, trying to save face.

“Hello.” Sloane responded politely, then gestured to the computer. “Need some help?”

The group blinked. For a second, they all thought they were hearing things.

They’d been stuck on this for hours, completely stumped, and now this freshman was offering to help? What was she trying to say–that they were useless?

“You serious?” John gave her a half–smirk, half–sneer. “We’re third–year computer science majors. If we couldn’t crack it, you think a freshman can?”

Sean’s face darkened too, but out of respect for Mr. Samson, he held back from saying anything too nasty. “This isn’t a game. If you’ve got time, maybe go hit the mall with the other girls.”

Morgan, meanwhile, was still completely focused on the apple icon on the screen and hadn’t heard a word of the exchange.

Sloane could tell they’d misunderstood her, but she couldn’t be bothered to explain. She simply turned to Mr. Samson. “Mr. Samson, mind if I give it a try?”

“Go ahead.” Mr. Samson hadn’t known Sloane for long and wasn’t sure what kind of person she was, but she didn’t strike him as someone who talked big without backing it up. Maybe–just maybe–she really could do it.
