The bottom of the pit was littered with dry branches and dead leaves; Sloane hit the ground hard, pain shooting through her entire body, but she didn’t dare make a sound. Curling up quickly, she held her breath and listened intently to the noise outside.

“Holy crop, where the heck did that wench go?” one of the assassins growled from the edge of the pit.

“Cut the crap, split up and search! She couldn’t have gotten far!” a gruff voice snapped, thick with impatience.

Sloane’s heart pounded so hard it felt like it might burst from her chest. She clutched the hairpin in her hand, ready to fight to the death if she had to.

But the men in black never noticed the deep pit. Their footsteps gradually faded into the distance.

Sloane let out a slow breath, though she knew she couldn’t stay here for long. Grabbing onto a vine, she climbed out quickly and darted deeper into the woods, using the trees for cover.

They’re using high–tech surveillance. There’s nowhere to hide. Her heart sank.

She ducked behind a large tree, held her breath, and tried to stay out of the scanner’s range. But the drone’s infrared detection system had already locked onto her location.
