Darkness swam before Sloane’s eyes. She forced herself to press the emergency contact button on her watch. The last thing she saw was the little girl’s guilty gaze–and Ginnie’s triumphant smile as she stepped out of the shadows.

The sharp click of high heels drew closer. “Don’t worry, Sloane. I’ll make sure you’re well… taken care of.”

Just before her consciousness slipped away, Sloane summoned all her strength and drove a needle into her thigh–it was a custom safeguard she carried, one that could slow the drug’s effect.

She fought to open her eyes. Through the blur of her vision, she saw Larry crouched in the corner by the window; his hands were bound to the frame with a tie, his forehead pressed against the cold glass, his breathing harsh and ragged.
