As Artemis spoke, she turned her head away anger.

The moment Dale heard her say she was taking the children away, panic set in. He grabbed her and pulled her close. “What are you doing?”

“After all these years as husband and wife, you’d really start doubting me over one comment? How could a marriage built on that possibly stay strong?”

“Artemis, I-”

“Now that she and her daughter are back, the tests between us are already difficult enough; but it’s only just begun, and you’re already…”

Her voice broke off there, choked with emotion. The thick sound of her sniffles made it impossible for her to go on.

Dale’s breathing quickened.

When Artemis tried to pull her hand away, he tightened his grip on her wrist and pulled her into his arms. “What nonsense are you imagining? I never stopped trusting you.”

“But just now, you-”

“It was my fault.” He cut her off before she could finish.

He said the words, but in his mind, images of Lina and Lana’s identical, hideous faces kept flashing–faces so ugly, they bore not a single trace of resemblance to him or Artemis.

Artemis was still furious, turning her head aside, refusing to look at him.

Dale, for once, showed patience. “Alright, don’t be angry anymore, hmm?”

He’d been losing his temper lately–there had been constant problems within the Ashen Pact- but right now…

Artemis asked, her voice tight with anger, “What exactly did Tessa say to you?”

That damn woman. Once she got back to Black Mountain, she’d make sure to deal with her properly. Let’s see what a little girl like her can stir up in my hands.

Dale didn’t want to bring up anything about Tessa. “Didn’t even see her. Forget it. Let’s just sleep.”

He hadn’t been sleeping well for days, and now he was completely exhausted.

Tessa might have been his daughter, but after everything that had happened, he couldn’t find much affection left for her.

What she’d brought to the Ashen Pact was nothing short of a disaster—a calamity.

That night, Tessa was tossed and turned by Victor until nearly ten in the morning before she finally fell asleep.

Victor stayed with her, sleeping as well.

Whatever needed to be done would be handled by his men; they knew what to do, especially when it came to the Ashen Pact.

The heat of the man’s body was too much, and Tessa wriggled restlessly in his arms.
