Then it hit her. To be honest, that question had been bugging her this whole time too.

“I’m not defending him,” Derrick said flatly.

His tone carried a mix of helplessness and disbelief.

Marie frowned. “Then why?”

He’d already said he wouldn’t—and had no reason to–but she still kept asking why. Derrick genuinely couldn’t follow her logic anymore.

When he didn’t answer fast enough, Marie waved it off. “Forget it. Doesn’t matter. I’m going to kill him anyway.”

If anyone had paid a steep price lately, it was Dan—and even the entire Ashen Pact had suffered because of it.
