“Babe?” Selena’s voice echoes through the empty home as I close the door, all the lights are off but I can tell from how close her voice is that she’s in the lounge. “Any news?” I don’t answer her as I take off my boots and then walk through the hall into the dark lounge. She’s curled up on the sofa, still wearing her blue scrubs and with pillow marks across her cheek, her eyes are red and sleepy as she blinks up at me.

“Nothing,” I drop myself into the armchair and being the amazing mate she is, she’s instantly up and pouring me a glass of Jack Daniels.

“I’m getting worried, it’s been three days. Mary is beside herself, I called in sick this morning and spent the day with her.” I dip my head in shame as Selena sits herself down on the coffee table and hands me the half full glass. I’m ashamed to say that I hadn’t even considered Mary in all of this mess, she and Heath just had a pup, of course she’s worried sick. I don’t say anything as I sip at my drink, Selena just sits there with her hand on my jean covered knee, it’s almost like she knows I need this time with her but that I have no words left.

“I’m screwing this up.” I whisper once the glass is empty, “I’m supposed to have the answers for him but I keep coming up with nothing.” Selena takes the glass from me and places it beside her, her small soft. hand on my chest has my eyes looking up at her.

“Then talk it out with me, that’s what we do at the hospital when we have a patient we can’t figure out. Maybe I can see something you are too close to see.” I shake my head as she talks softly, it’s almost like she doesn’t want to disturb the darkness surrounding us.
