Samiyah was a woman of action, and once she made a decision, there was no turning back. She immediately sent word to the Valen family, demanding that Margaret come that very night to discuss the marriage arrangement. If she refused, Samiyah would accuse her of attempting to seduce Eleanor under the guise of marriage and take the matter to the authorities.

This was a desperate move, but Samiyah could no longer afford to hesitate.

The Blackwell family was on the brink of disaster, and if they didn’t align themselves with the Valen family. they would sink. The Valen family was their only hope if they were to go down, at least they would have some kind of lifeline.

Her plan worked quickly. That very night, a matchmaker arrived at their doorstep.

The matchmaker was skilled in persuasion, subtly implying that the Valen family was above the Blackwell family, and then made the point clear it was impossible to marry Eleanor as the legitimate wife, but if she was willing to settle as a concubine, they could arrange for her to be picked up at a good time and sent to William’s house.

In

the end, a few threats were made to seal the deal.

Milton and Samiyah both knew that with Eleanor’s current reputation, she could never be the main wife it had always been an impossible prospect, but now it was even more so.

After all the arrangements were made, there was no need to wait for a “good day.” A few days later, the wedding procession, complete with firecrackers and gifts, arrived to bring Eleanor to William’s house.

However, while the Valen family remained discreet, the Blackwell family made no effort to do the same.

The pomp and circumstance of the Blackwell family’s dowry, complete with the sounds of gongs and drums, made it seem as though William was marrying a legitimate wife, not a concubine. Despite the fact that Eleanor was only being wed as a concubine, Milton made a show of it, and soon everyone knew the

truth.

Margaret had intended to keep the matter quiet, but with the Blackwell family making such a spectacle, she had no choice but to invite some family members to the gathering.

It was common for concubines in the lower ranks to not have a formal ceremony, but for those in the aristocracy, the situation was different. A few tables were set up to introduce the new concubine to the family. Oliver naturally attended.

Eleanor, with the marks of her suicide attempt still visible on her neck, was now dressed in a high–necked gown with two strings of bright red coral beads. In this attire, the marks were barely noticeable. As the eldest son, William led Eleanor to Oliver to offer a toast.

Oliver, who was seen as an outcast in the Valen family, was not particularly respected, and most members didn’t think highly of him.

After the toast, Oliver had to say a few words of blessing and give the new concubine a gift. This was

customary.

But Oliver didn’t finish his drink. He merely took a small sip, handed over a stack of money, and said, “Southern Watch has matters to attend to. Please, enjoy the rest of the evening.

With that he and um and left

Everyone was stunned Oliver, known for his notorious reputation outside, had always been careful and respectful within the family. But today, even though the family was celebrating the official taking of a concubine, he got up and left without finishing his toast, offering nothing more than a stack of money.

People murmured, calling him heartless and cold, but Margaret, ever the diplomat, smiled and said, “We all know Oliver is a busy man, focused on state affairs. Please, don’t trouble him.”

The matchmaker, holding the money, felt awkward. The bills were unbanded–so careless and casual.

Someone joked, “He often give tips in the Vermelle Hall tavern. Maybe he got too drunk and thought he was there again?”

Eleanor’s face grew pale as she watched the scene unfold. She tugged on William’s sleeve, her eyes filled with sorrow.

William, already angry from his humiliation, had been dealing with Samiyah’s threats and his mounting frustrations. Although he had once had some affection for Eleanor, especially compared to Isolde, all that goodwill had dissipated over time, especially after the events at Montlins Manor and his involvement with Doug. He had no intention of taking Eleanor as a concubine anymore.

Yet, under Samiyah’s pressure, he had no choice but to marry her. His anger boiled over when Oliver left without a word, and Eleanor, feeling the sting of his resentment, tugged at him, desperate for attention. Without thinking, he shoved her away and snapped, “You’ve ruined my reputation!”
