Chapter 90 Prudence Is Back

Prudence returned to the Duke’s estate on the 9th of August.

A grand procession accompanied her, with over a dozen carriages laden with their belongings.

Along with the old lady came Vance, Priscilla, and her two granddaughters and two grandsons.

Geoffrey had already ordered everyone in the estate to come out and welcome them, including the grounded Matilda and Michelle.

Isolde, of course, had to be there as well.

She stood beside Geoffrey, watching as several maids helped Prudence down from the carriage.

Dressed in a silk dress, her graying hair was styled into a high bun. Despite being in her sixties, she carried herself with remarkable energy. Her long neck gave her an air of authority, and though her face bore deep wrinkles at the corners of her eyes and mouth, her sharp gaze remained undiminished. Even with a gentle smile, she exuded an undeniable aura of command.

Vance was currently in business in Caelmont and had once served as an official, but his career never took off. After failing to secure a promotion, he attempted to buy his way up the ranks, only to be exposed by a righteous superior, which led to his dismissal.

Since then, he had turned to business, though he never made much of a name for himself. Over the years, Prudence had discreetly used Prunella’s money to support him more times than she could count.

Despite being younger than Geoffrey, Vance’s indulgence in drinking, socializing, and other pleasures had taken a toll on him, making him look even older than his brother.

His wife, Priscilla, came from a once prominent aristocratic family. Though her ancestors had held noble titles, by her father’s generation, the hereditary honors had ceased.

Nevertheless, as a daughter of a noble house, she was tactful, socially adept, and skilled at winning her mother–in–law’s favor, whose support had elevated her status in the household, surpassing even Matilda’s.

Naturally, she looked down on Matilda. She once looked down on Prunella as well.

Although Prunella came from a distinguished family, to Priscilla, who considered herself true nobility, Prunella was nothing more than the daughter of a military man–uncouth and utterly lacking in refinement.

What Priscilla took the most pride in was that she had given birth to a son and two daughters for the family, while Prunella had only produced one troublesome daughter.

The most fascinating thing was that in her second year of marriage, she had arranged for Geoffrey to take a concubine. The next year, the concubine gave birth to a son, making him the eldest of the next generation, albeit illegitimate.

Hence, this gave Priscilla confidence in her position within the family.
