Chapter 297 The Theory of Imprints

After waiting for a while, the doors to the inner hall opened.

Out came Rowena, the palace maid. By now, the sky had brightened, and the sun rose from the east, painting the clouds with hues of orange. Birds chirped, filling the air with a sense of vitality.

Rowena wore a gentle smile and curtsied, “Queen Mother requests the presence of the Queen and the concubines.”

Since the Queen and the concubines were to be received first, Isolde and the other noblewomen had to wait outside.

Aveline could have entered immediately, but seeing Isolde waiting, she decided to stay with her.

The Queen led the concubines inside. Isolde had expected to wait for at least half an hour, but to her surprise, the Queen and the concubines emerged shortly after, having spent less than the time it takes for half an incense stick to burn.

Rowena reappeared and addressed the noblewomen, “Queen Mother requests the presence of the ladies and young misses.”

Isolde quickly adjusted her attire and followed the procession inside.

However, as she ascended the stone steps, Rowena stopped her, “Princess Langley, please wait. You may enter after the other ladies have paid their respects.”

Isolde was taken aback and looked up, meeting Alice’s smug gaze.

According to their status, they were to enter into groups. What was she thinking? Did she believe she could enter alongside everyone else?

It seemed the Queen Mother was well aware of her lowly status. Though she had been granted the title of princess, it was merely a formality, much like her father’s title as the Duke of Blackmoor.

Isolde had no choice but to stand aside. Aveline wanted to stay, but Rowena said, “Princess Aveline, please go in first. Rosemary, Marchioness of Greystone, is inside and wishes to speak with you.”

Aveline had no choice but to say to Isolde, “Don’t worry, I won’t leave too quickly. I’ll wait for you inside.”

“Yes,” Isolde replied softly.

In truth, this was better. If she were to have a private audience, it would be easier to speak her mind.

Esme, worried that Isolde might be anxious, offered a few words of comfort. But Isolde, preoccupied with her thoughts, remained silent.

The noblewomen stayed slightly longer than the Queen and the concubines. When they emerged, they had left their gifts behind.

Caroline, supporting Alice, glanced haughtily at Isolde and sneered, “What does she think she compare herself to us. She wanted to enter with us, but she wasn’t even allowed.”

With that, they walked away.
