Chapter 34: Nikolai

I took in my surroundings, there was black and red blood everywhere, the once peaceful meadow, was now decimated with what remained of a brutal battle. I decided that once I leave this place with Mary, I’ll send in at least a hundred warriors to comb through these woods and kill the remaining monsters inside. Once upon a time, I had wished to find a way to free the rouge beasts, but I knew that was just a young man’s wish. There was absolutely no way to domestic a beast whose lost their humanity.

I looked down at my clothes and grimaced. I was covered in my own blood as well as the ghoul’s. I didn’t want to frighten Mary, but if I didn’t see her now my beast would take over. He was a raving lunatic right now, pacing back and forth in my mind. The only thing that would calm him right now, was Mary’s scent. I walked slowly over to the metal door, as I tried to determine the best way to approach her. By the time I reached the door I still hand’t come up with a plan that would scare her, so I knocked on the door lightly.

There was no noise from the other side. What was I expecting, her to open the door with wide welcoming arms. Of course not, Mary isn’t dumb. She has no idea who is standing on the other side of the door, and if she did have some clue, she might not even want to see me. I placed my hand on the latch to the bunker door, gently pulling against it to see if it would open. The door didn’t budge. Good girl, even in her panicked state she had remembered to lock the door behind her. My beast was now desperate to see Mary, he didn’t care for my dillydallying. He took over my arms, tightening my grip on the latch and prying the door off the hinges. I dropped down inside the bunker, as soon as my feet touch the floor, I see a metal bar in my peripheral line of sight. I have no time to react before the metal connects with the side of my head.

“Fuck.” I growl out, gripping the side of my head.

“Oh my god, Nikolai!” Mary cries hysterically, running towards me, grabbing my face in her hands. “I’m so sorry! I thought… I didn’t know what to think,” She stammers out, tears running down her face.

I notice her favoring her foot, reminding me that her leg was hurt. I pick her up intent on carrying her to the counter where I can sit her down and inspect her.

“Nikolai, you’re hurt!” Mary exclaimed, “Put me down. Let me look you over.”

“Mary, I’ll be fine. I am a vampire remember. What I need to do is look you over before the monster inside me goes insane.”

Mary tried to protest, but quieted down as soon as she realized I wasn’t going to give in. She allowed me to carry her over to the makeshift kitchen and set her down on the counter. The bunker was dusty, but everything inside of it looked sturdy still. As soon as Mary’s butt touched the counter, I stepped back to look her over. Somehow, after an entire day of trekking through the woods, and battling a ghoul, she still managed to look exquisite. My fingers brushed across her face, gently, stroking a small cut I noticed on her cheek. I continued to look her over, growling at the sight of her throat, where finger shaped bruises laced around her neck. She had scrapes and bruises running up and down her arms, but that was the extent of her upper body injuries. I squatted down and took her legs in my
