Chapter 0239

Knox POV

I sat at the bar, staring into the amber liquid in my glass. It was my ninth drink, or maybe my tenth. I'd lost count. The White Flag was filling up as the lights dimmed, and the air was filled with the low hum of conversation and the occasional clink of glasses. Supernaturals of all kinds mingled around me, but I didn't care. None of them mattered. Nothing mattered without Lottie.

Kane's plan was supposed to protect her. I agreed to it, thinking I'd still get to see her, to be a part of her life. That we would be able to sneak moments alone with her to jog her memory of who we were and that we, in fact, had not abandoned her. But now? Now, she is gone. And I was stuck here, drowning in regret, hate, and misery. The alcohol didn't help. It never did, but I kept drinking, hoping for a reprieve that never came.

I spotted a blonde at the end of the bar, her eyes scanning the room. She was like me, a werewolf; I could sense it. I flashed her a smile, momentarily forcing the old Knox to come to the surface. She smiled back, giving me the all-clear. Getting to my feet, I headed over on somewhat numb feet, pushing by some and using others to support my swaying legs.
