“Why waste your breath explaining?” She interrupted, her patience razor-thin. “If some woman matters more to you than your own kid, then spare Joy the empty promises!” With that, she cut the call.

“Hadley?!” Eric’s shout echoed uselessly.

He glared at his phone, brows knitting together, completely thrown.

“Mr. Flynn?” A nurse edged closer, her tone tentative. “The specialists are ready. Would you like to go in now?”

Eric’s grip tightened on his phone, hesitating, and then he gave a curt nod. “Yeah.”

He turned and strode into the office.

A soft shower had fallen earlier today.

Linda opened her eyes to the gentle tap of rain against the glass pane, the hospital room steeped in an unsettling hush, broken only by the presence of her caregiver seated close by.
