A chill crawled up Elissa’s spine. She threw off the covers, swung her legs over the side of the bed, and rushed to the door. Her footsteps echoed down the hall as she ran straight to the neonatal unit. Then, she pressed the doorbell frantically.

“Elissa?” A night nurse opened the door and recognized Elissa instantly. After all, Elissa had come every day without fail.

“Where’s Locke?” Elissa asked, breathless. She scanned the room behind the nurse. “I want to see Locke.”
