He felt helpless, uncertain how to ease her pain.

After hesitating, Ernest slipped off his shoes and climbed onto the bed. He wrapped his arms around her, lying beside her with a gentle hold.

Nerves prickled at him.

Even though they had Locke, his memories of that distant night were hazy. The details had faded so much that he could hardly recall anything at all. This was the first time he held her so closely, fully present and aware.
