Chapter 1888 Loneliness

"Nothing. I was only wondering about it."

Gareth did not believe her. She sounded serious when she asked the question. Therefore, it was not something she had only been wondering about. He suspected she had planned something.

Still, Gareth considered earnestly before answering, "You're serious, decisive, intelligent… and beautiful."

Elisa had many good points and was undoubtedly beautiful. Yet, of all her talents, beauty was the least worth mentioning.

Elisa nodded.

Then, she turned to Gareth and stared at him as if trying to peer into his soul.

She said, "I'm not some dainty and helpless lady. We're currently at a disadvantage, and your effort alone won't be enough if we wish to go home. We each need to do our part. Didn't you say we are a team? Why won't you let me help you?"

Gareth opened his mouth to speak but could not make a sound.

Elisa is right.

I kept thinking about protecting her and forgot she wasn't a weak young lady. Instead, she is capable of facing challenges with me. We are… comrades in arms.

Gareth deliberated for a while before nodding.

"I understand."

Elisa laughed. She looked so radiant under the sunlight that he could not look away.

Gareth suddenly realized how fortunate he was.

Not because he was born into the prominent Wickam family or the high position he achieved.

Instead, he was thankful to have met Elisa.

The two returned to Mrs. Kella's house together.

When they opened the gate, Mrs. Kella happened to walk out of the kitchen.

She saw their expressions and knew Gareth managed to register for the tournament.

Although she was happy for them, she could not help but feel sad.

Thus, she did not say anything but returned to the kitchen to make dinner.

She looked lonely.

Elisa and Gareth exchanged glances and understood each other.

Mrs. Kella lived alone before they arrived.

Once they left, Mrs. Kella would be all alone again.

If only things did not have to end up this way.

They had dinner in the yard, listening to the sounds of cicadas and birds as they ate. The cool breeze blew at them, bringing a hint of the saltiness of the sea. It was pleasant.

Unfortunately, they could not disperse the depressing mood hanging over them.

After dinner, Gareth offered to wash the dishes.

Mrs. Kella initially refused, but Gareth insisted.

She waved her hands in surrender. "Fine, you can do it. You won't be able to help out much longer anyway."

Then, she got up to return to her room.
