Chapter 41 Rescue

Just then, her phone rang.

She stared at the caller ID, the red-eyed bunny avatar. A little jolt went through her.

Why is he calling?

“Hello, Mr. Graves…”

“Yeah. I’m at your gate. Which room is yours?”

Kaia faltered.

“Mr. Graves, you know already?”.

“Mm-hmm.” Lucien confirmed, ever succinct. “Alyssa filled me in. So, where’s your room?”

Kaia snapped out of her surprise. “Oh! Oh, right. Mr. Graves, you can get in through the back. My room faces the back gate, but-uh-there are usually two guards down there.”

She paused, then suddenly leaned toward the glass. “Oh! Wait –one of them just left! I think he went to the bathroom or something-”

Lucien chuckled, a low sound, “Easy. Hold tight. I’m coming to

rescue you.”

He put this odd little emphasis on “rescue,” like it was some kind of joke-or maybe a dare.

Rescue me? Please don’t tell me he expects a thank-you kiss or something insane like that.

Kaia tried to quash the absurd idea. She pressed herself against the curtains, eyes glued to the remaining guard below.

As if on cue, the guard, who’d been periodically glancing up at her window, suddenly broke into a run toward the main gate.

Kaia seized her chance, throwing open the window. And there he was, bathed in moonlight.

Lucien tilted his head back with a faint smile. He calmly opened his arms. “Dare to jump?”
