Thankfully, the painfully awkward ride soon came to an end. Once they arrived, Kaia helped Kayla into bed, then fetched a warm towel to wipe her face. After a few sleepy grumbles, Kayla finally dozed off.

Kaia poured some hot lemon water into a thermos and left it by the bedside, along with a handwritten note.

Still, even after getting back into the car, she felt unsettled.
