His eyes scanned the space quickly, landing first on Kaia, who was curled up in the corner like a shy turtle retreating into its shell. Finally, his gaze settled on Jude.

“I saw on the news that you fainted,” Lucien said evenly. “I happened to be nearby, so I thought I’d stop by. But then I couldn’t reach my wife–she didn’t answer her phone. That really worried me, so… here I am.”
