Lucien pressed his lips into a firm line as he stepped into the hospital room.

His eyes scanned the space quickly, landing first on Kaia, who was curled up in the corner like a shy turtle retreating into its shell. Finally, his gaze settled on Jude.

“I saw on the news that you fainted,” Lucien said evenly. “I happened to be nearby, so I thought I’d stop by. But then I couldn’t reach my wife–she didn’t answer her phone. That really worried me, so… here I am.”

Jude blinked, trying to follow the logic. He vaguely remembered hearing that Lucien had gotten married recently, but he had no idea what that had to do with him passing out.
