Chapter 297 True Color

One of the staff there pulled up a message on their phone and

showed it to her.

“She requested bereavement leave. Said she went home because her grandmother passed away.”

Kaia blinked.

Vanessa had never once mentioned a grandmother before.

Jerry still came to work every day, but he no longer wore the shoes Vanessa had given him.

In the break–room, noticing Kaia stealing glances at him, Jerry blinked and asked, “Kaia, why are you looking at me like that? Is there something on my face?”

Kaia shook her head. “It’s nothing. Just looking around.”

Kaia called Vanessa again, but there was no answer.

Sending a text also got no response.

She was on edge, feeling that something was off.

During the lunch break, as Kaia scrolled through her chat history with Vanessa, her eyes suddenly widened.

“That’s not right! Vanessa said her grandma died when she was a kid!”

It was two years ago when Vanessa had casually mentioned it during a chat, and Kaia only remembered after checking the records.

Kaia asked for leave and went straight to the police station.

“Miss, you’re saying you suspect something has happened to your friend?” a police officer asked.

“Yes! She took bereavement leave from the company, but her grandma died a long time ago. The reason for the leave doesn’t hold up. I went to her rental apartment, but no one answered the door.”

The police officers looked at each other in confusion. “You said the reason for the leave might be false, but the leave–application process requires certain procedures. It’s unlikely that someone else used her phone to apply, right?

“You just said she was in a bad mood after a breakup. Maybe she just wants to be alone to calm down. Don’t worry too much.”

Kaia had no choice but to leave the police station with her head down.
