Chapter 30 Take a Look

Josephine pounded on the door for a while, but she eventually collapsed and sat on the ground. The cluttered storage room was pitch–black and cramped.

It was too quiet. Even the air was still.

The overwhelming darkness enveloped Josephine, like countless spider webs wrapping around her, making it difficult for her to breathe.

She crouched on the icy floor, hugging her knees tightly.

The only sounds in the entire room were the sounds of her breathing and the beating of her heart.

Lewis asked her to reflect on herself, but she didn’t know what to reflect on. Was it because she waited alone in the restaurant for five hours, or was it because she sent Mrs. Jinkins home?

She didn’t know what she had done

wrong.

Josephine felt around in her pocket and took out her phone. It was dead and wouldn’t turn on.

Curled up against the door, she shut her eyes and covered her ears. Josephine pretended that she was still in her bedroom, just that it was dark outside.

When she was six years old, Daphne had also locked her up in the storage room for a whole day. Rats and bugs crawled over her skin as she was locked inside. For a six- year–old child like Josephine, it was terribly traumatizing.

The most tragic thing was that she couldn’t even make a sound to express her fear. She desperately pounded and scratched at the door until her fingers bled, but no one came to rescue her.

In the end, it was Lewis who opened the door and rescued her.

That was the first time Lewis hugged her. She could still remember the warmth of that embrace vividly as it happened yesterday.

The faint, minty fragrance was uniquely Lewis’s when he was just a teenager.

Now, he was the one who plunged her into the abyss and brought her back to that fateful day.

Her beautiful memory of him was tainted by his actions.
