She bit her lip as she walked toward the ICU, feeling defeated.

Stella followed close behind, concerned and unsure of how to help.

Peering through the ICU window, Devyn saw her mother, Maureen, connected to a ventilator, looking fragile and vulnerable.

Tears began to roll down Devyn’s cheeks.

She remembered how, as a child, she always saw her mother as invincible.

But now, her mother seemed just a breath away from leaving her.

Witnessing her friend’s distress, Stella remained silent for a long while before softly asking, “What’s wrong with your mother?”

Devyn glanced at Stella and choked as she disclosed Maureen’s condition.

Her eyes were red, and tears streamed down her cheeks.

Recalling how Devyn appeared a few days earlier, Stella felt a surge of sadness.
