Lemira held the sleek black membership card in her hand, her eyes wide with

surprise. She couldn't believe Mrs. Amanda had gone out of her way to help her. It was flattering, to say the least!

Even Susanna and Evelina were taken aback. Susanna, unable to hold back, blurted out, "Mrs. Amanda, what are you doing?"

"Do I need to explain myself to you, Susanna? Have you not learned a shred of manners from your sister?" Mrs. Amanda's voice was stern; she had overheard Susanna's earlier snide comments towards Lemira and found them beyond rude.

Evelina quickly intervened. "Mrs. Amanda, you misunderstood Susanna. She was just concerned for Lemira, making sure she knew the ropes so she wouldn't have an awkward moment at the entrance."
