Chapter 153

The doctor had said that her spine was misaligned. After a minor surgery to correct it, her back was now immobilized in a brace, and she was unable to move her upper body.

She tried to shift slightly to ease the soreness in her lower back, turning her gaze towards the door just as Brian came in, carrying a food tray in his hand.

Their eyes met for a moment before Natalie looked away, shifting her body to the other side.

Brian glanced at her turned back, walked over to the bed, and sat down. He pulled up the small overbed table and began to unpack the food tray, laying out its contents.

Natalie had barely eaten anything that morning, and the scent of the food caused her stomach to audibly protest from hunger. Yet, driven by pride, she chose to ignore it and closed her eyes, feigning indifference.

Brian got a bowl of oatmeal and picked up a few pieces of the light vegan dishes she used to enjoy. He sat on the other side of the bed. With a cranking motion, he raised the head of the hospital bed a bit and propped a pillow under Natalie’s shoulders.

Forced to sit up, Natalie frowned and said in a low voice, “I don’t want to eat.”

As if he hadn’t heard her, Brian blew on a spoonful of oatmeal and brought it to her lips.
